Sundays Well Community
Our community is on the Sundays Well Road and adjoining roads. It's a picturesque historic neighbourhood with lots of potential and great people living here.
We want to start a Community Association whose aim should be something like "to protect and improve conditions and amenities in our neighbourhood for the benefit and enjoyment of all the residents."
Many areas in Cork city have developed recognised neighbourhood associations which help them thrive their communities and link as communities with Cork City Council.
We in the Sundays Well area do not have such an association, and we would do well to have one. The voice of a community association carries more weight than individual voices or voices without a formal association behind them. Although we have "social media" not everyone uses FaceBook, WhatsApp, Instagram, etc.
We'll need an AGM (most probably, February, 2026)
Community objectives?
- Traffic (speeding, mounting on kerbs, adequate signage)
- Hygiene (dog fouling, maintenance of storm gutters)
- Facilities (parking spaces, lighting, pedestrian pathways)
- Amenities (encouraging restaurants, bars, clubs, small shops)
- Security (making the Good Shepherd Convent area, Daly Bridge etc. safe)
- Play and recreation areas for all (kids and adults)
- Social gatherings (where we can meet others from our community)
- ...?
There may well be more. Let's hear about them.
We know that the development of the Good Shepherd Convent area is a divisive issue among some of us, so we don't propose to go there. We need to be inclusive to make our voices heard.
Membership of the Community Association will be free to all residents of the area. There are grants we can apply for. We hope that the Association will meet in public at least once a year to consult with and hear the proposed actions of the community.
Starting out
At present, we're just a small organising committee who want to get things going, following recognised guidelines and practices for community associations.
In February 2026 we'll hold our first AGM and elect a committee.
At the AGM we'll need a democratically elected committee of at least a Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer and Spokesperson, plus two auditors. All people from our area. These roles will be honorary (ie they will contribute their time for no payment.) The committee will meet at most once a month.
Who is “we”?
We do NOT presume that any of us will be office holders or chairpersons. That's up to voting at the first AGM meeting. We're just trying to get things going up to the AGM.
Folk involved in the starting up so far:
- Cathleen Bowen
- Tom Coleman
- Bob Jackson
- Jurek Kirakowski
- Martin Krasa
- John McNamara
- Grace Neville
- Don Spicer
- Geoff Steiner-Scott
- Andrew Sullivan
- Tara Vernon
Spread the word
If you know anyone in our neighbourhood who you think may be interested in contributing, please spread the news to them. We have very limited resources so we rely on personal contacts as well as outreach... and word of mouth on social media platforms!
Do come and help set up an organisation that will make our neighbourhood community a safe, clean, and vibrant place to live in.
